I'm going to give what I hope will be a informative talk on Marketing. It's not very difficult to understand and with a little careful reading and comprehension you will better understand.
A market is volatile in times like these. Who you are targeting is very difficult to put your hands on, since no group is doing well, or have job security. The only group that isn't shaky are seniors who have retired. They are on a fixed income and pretty much where they are going to be. Everyone else is totally up in the air, and the only thing we can do is our best to look into the future and construct a "target citizen" who we think would be interested in living in Pontiac. This is who I imagine they will be. Not the average citizen who is living below the poverty line, but working class citizens with the potential to grow our tax base.
- 30-50 years old
- Two to three children
- At least two years in college
- Married - Single parent (not divorced)
- $35,000-$50,000 a year (2010 equivalent) household income
Now, the key is where would they work in our city? At this point there is very few employers offering this type of income to the residents. It would then become our job, by 2020 to attract these companies to our city. How do we do this? What is the first step to marketing our city into success? It begins with sound leadership. People that others can believe have the knowledge and ability to do the job at hand. Not a person who has simply held a popularity contest position at their job, but someone with the "know-how" to run a city. Having faith in your administration is key. Intelligent people looking to come into a situation, aren't eager to listen to people who don't know what they are talking about, and can't form a proper sentence to express themselves openly. Why would you pay for a imbecile to lead you and your family? You wouldn't. Emotions are not the key, but business, and if you don't know business you shouldn't be in office.
When you look to Market something that has been tainted; like Pontiac has and is...There is a degree of clean-up that needs to take place. They did that with the last council, and replaced them with a bunch of derelict followers. They are unified for all the wrong reasons. Stuck on stupid...Lost in how to find their way. I think I heard someone say they want to recall our Mayor...Perfect example of being "Stuck on stupid". Got their mind focused on all the wrong things. Still unable to show they can make sound choices. Instead of building a brand, they are tearing down any chance of unification. Even if they get rid of our Mayor, they can't rid the city of the Emergency Financial Manager. So all they would succeed in doing is wasting valuable time that should have been spent building our brand. That is Pontiac!
We don't have anything to show we are great or worth investing in. The Silverdome made a mockery of us around the world. How do we come back from that? As of now we look like a Lindsey Lohan doll spread out across Oakland County. Whenever people think we're going to get some help, we do something stupid to mess it up. THE ONLY THING OUR COUNCIL SHOULD DO IS LET THE COUNTY CONTRACT GO THROUGH! People will believe that we have sound business sense and look at us as having possibility. After we get involved with the County and they are helping us get our city safe, we can move past this squabbles and into the future. I have several things in my head to keep our city filled with our own people, and how to get our police back!
First we have to build our brand, and increase the value of the people and business who live and do business here and that will never happen without sound leadership; of which we have none! LJ cannot do it alone, not when he has people so emotionally driven they have no clue of the concept of a dollar; even though they have run a household for years. Emotions would warrant that when you walk into the grocery store you would like to eat steak. You know, however, you aren't single any longer and you have a set budget. You can only spend so much, and even if you borrow from the light bill to buy that steak, the light bill will still have to be paid. But if you can buy chicken, feed your entire family, and pay the entire light bill, there is no stress. Instead of worrying about the lights, you can put your energy into finding ways to make the money to buy the steak in the future. Gathering the money to keep the police this year, does not account for next year. Next year the account will be higher, and in the 11th hour you will have to scramble to come up with yet another solution to save the police. Let the county have it, create a solution for your woes, and spend your time building that brand!
How do you build it once you have a sound leadership base of men and women knowledgeable in running a municipality? Hire two people, one who will be able to find free money and another one to represent the city in other places. A person who is sharp and able to say, "This is Pontiac"...Send them out and bring businesses in. This will not work without security, of which at this point is sketchy and unpredictable. With the County in here, its stable. Once we convince businesses to come here, we build partnerships for our schools. We work with our School Board to build our classes and curriculum, and did I say that all of this has to be done without egos and pretense? No one is entitled to a back room deal or personal perks of the job. Everything will be done for the good of the schools. Doing our best to mirror the best. All this hiring of friends and family has to STOP! We know that doesn't work, smoking buddies and sex partners don't either. This will come only after it is determined the person is truly qualified.
Once we are secure, we have decent schools...After sound leadership, we can say we have a good brand. I'm not sure the people of Pontiac understand the concept of building a brand. I think they still believe that we have a million dollars to blow and steal a year. Those folks still stealing the money, and things still aren't being done correctly. We have to do what this latest judge did to Lohan. Somebody needs to force us to live by the rules on a continual bases and not just for a little while or until it allows us to get in office. People in other cities nearby, have people running the show who are ex-CEO's and stuff. Men and women who know how to run things...When we get that we talk about "recall". Lindsey just went into the bathroom to do a line or two and was caught on camera. For anyone to talk about recalling Jukowski is a sign that this council is dumb and dumber than the last one.
In order to grow, you need a good product to begin with. At this point, we are nothing no one wants to be involved with. We can't even see when we need to stop our own bleeding, and I know it's due to a lack of business sense. Right now, we need to cut our loses, just like the Silverdome. Fish or cut bait, and move to making sure Bouchard never gets away with making our city his. Our portly friend Kermit Williams talk about "complaints", in an attempt to raise another emotional issue. Like I said, it's just like a child who wants that toy in K-Mart. He can kick and scream and cry all day, but all the emotions aren't going to give the parent the money to buy the toy! Even if they scrape up enough money, a stranger gives it to them the question will still stand:
What's going to happen the next time the child wants the toy? Are you going t scrape up the pennies every time? Will a stranger always be there to give you the funds? No, and so you teach your child early on that they can't always have what they want, and sometimes the situation won't call for you to have your way! Sometimes a parent just has to say, "No!" This will help not only the child stay focused on what is needed, but also help the parent keep their budget in order. When a parent constantly gives into a spoiled and unreasonable child there will always be a problem, because that child will always think that they are in control. I think that's what Granholm was telling the people of Pontiac when she sent Leeb. The days of you having your way, stealing, hiring your family and friends and such is over. Finding something to hold over the head of your Mayor, Council people and leaders, so you can rob the city blind is over! YOU CAN NOT HAVE YOUR WAY, ANYMORE! Getting rid of Jukowski isn't going to do anything, but make you look stupid. That man has a degree from one of the most prestigious schools in this country. The stupid people on our council would actually make the people of our city think that degree is nothing. Whoever believes that is dumb, too, and probably as uneducated and jealous as the member of our council.
To even speak about something so dumb is dumb...I'm sorry, but this is my blog!!! Anytime someone says impeach a self-made man with that kind of education, I'm just thinking about words like retarded, dysfunctional and inept. Those members of the council need to ask him, "How did you get rich?" I think if he told them, they would even understand the concept. Seeing they don't know anything about, quality control or reputation in its correlation with building this city! While they are trying to save their friends jobs, they need to start getting along so that people will begin to believe we have some scruples in this town. Then we can continue to make other fiscally, not emotionally sound choices when it comes to our city. We stink Pontiac! We look bad and we don't know the simplest concepts of Business 101. You need to have more money coming in than going out...With that...I'm done!
